Winter lecture at ZESS

UAVs as embedded systems

Under the title “UAVs as embedded systems,” ACS held a special lecture at ZESS in the last weeks of the winter semester.

The lecture was part of the master’s courses Embedded Systems and Process & Optimal Control, and focused on the design and control of drones and how their flight can be specifically influenced by using various sensor technologies.

The day began with an introductory lecture on UAVs. First, the multicopters used at the chair were presented and classified, before their structure and central components were explained in more detail. Subsequently, the connection to the two master’s courses was established and the control engineering methods used in multicopters were explained in more detail. The lecture concluded with an overview of current research questions in the field of embedded systems and the opportunities for students to actively participate in the context of their final theses.

Afterwards, the students were given a tour through the research building ZESS, where they were provided with an overview of all the main research areas and its interdisciplinary nature.

The tour ended in the flight lab, where the content covered in the lecture was brought to life in a practical demonstration. Flights with drones of different sizes were demonstrated, differences between indoor and outdoor use were highlighted, and safety algorithms were presented.
