Lecture at Zess

UAVs as Embedded Systems

The Chair of Automatic Control and Systems Theory organized a special lecture for the Master’s subjects Embedded Systems and Process Control at ZESS in the last week of the winter semester.

The lecture revolved around the construction and control of UAVs and how flight performance can be influenced using various sensors.

The lecture began with a presentation about the classification of Multicopters used at ZESS, their construction and most important components. This led to methods used to control the Multicopters, directly linking both master subjects and giving the students an idea of how these methods are used in real-world applications. The presentation ended by giving a short overview about current research topics and how students can contribute to this research by writing their master thesis at the chair.

After that, the students were then given a guided tour around ZESS, where they were given an overview of all the key research areas in the research building and its interdisciplinary nature.

The tour ended in the flight laboratory, where the students were offered a practical demonstration of the content covered in the lecture. This included the flight of different sized UAVs, the visualization of the difference between flying indoors and outdoors and the presentation of safety algorithms, which marked the end of the special lecture.
