Under the headline “Little Wonders,” more than 70 children visited ZESS for exciting hands-on experiments. At more than ten stations, they were able to try things out and learn how versatile mechanical engineering is, while also gaining insights into the research conducted by the departments.
The children raced hovercrafts while wearing FPV goggles and got a first glimpse of drone research in the flight lab. Next door, they played can toss against a tower of cans moved by a robot, watched live as a small airplane was 3D-printed – which they were then allowed to launch themselves – and steered a real laser beam using mirrors and lenses in a game of laser chess.

The event was made possible by about 28 volunteers from all participating departments, who pitched in with everything from registration to the activity stations.
